WHO: Soldiers of all ranks with a family housing requirement may apply for on-post housing. Spouses with a valid ID card and Special Power of Attorney may apply for on-post housing in the absence of sponsor as long as they provide all required documentation (see "Required Documents" below). The Service Member must already be assigned and processed into Fort Lewis.

Soldiers whose family status changes after arriving at Fort Lewis are eligible to apply for on-post housing. Application must be made within 30 days of status change to receive an eligibility date as of the "status change." If application is not made within 30 days, eligibility date will then be the "date of application." If the soldier's status changes due to pregnancy, then a pregnancy statement signed by a physician must be provided. The same is true for soldiers wishing to increase their bedroom requirement due to pregnancy. Click here for more information on Family Housing Assignment Policies.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS: The following are required for application for on-post housing:

DA 31, Application for Leave. Not required if soldier has been signed in to the installation for over 30 days.

PCS orders assigning soldiers to Ft. Lewis.

All dependents must be enrolled in DEERS.

Legal custody papers (when applicable, signed by Judge).

Soldiers returning from a hardship unaccompanied tour need a copy of the PCS orders which placed them on the unaccompanied tour.

WHEN: Soldiers must apply for on-post housing within 30 days of signing in to the installation to receive an eligibility date of "date departed last duty station." Eligibility date for applications received after 30 days of signing in to the installation will be the "date of application." The application may be completed and sent to the Housing Office prior to the soldier arriving at Fort Lewis and will be activated when the soldier arrives and signs into Fort Lewis. All soldiers must be signed in to Fort Lewis to occupy on-post housing.

HOW: Soldiers will be required to select one village, based on their rank and bedroom size, at time of application. Soldiers are placed on the waiting list for that village. Waiting times vary depending on village selected. Soldiers are responsible for keeping the housing office informed of changes in eligibility status, unit, duty and home phone numbers.

KEEP HOUSING INFORMED: If the soldier's records are not current (duty/home numbers, unit, family status) and/or the Lewis-McChord Family Housing office is unable to locate the soldier after three attempts to contact, the soldier will be REMOVED FROM THE WAITING LIST.
